Little Lawyers is a course to teach basic legal skills to school-aged children. The two aims of the course are: 1) Teach children skills that will be useful in their life that aren’t on the curriculum, whether or not they choose to pursue a career in law. 2) Raise aspirations, promote an interest in the legal profession and boost confidence from a young age, particularly among children from less advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. I run the course in schools and online. The course covers: 1) The purpose of laws, how laws are made and how the court system works; 2) How to campaign for changes in the law; 3) Inspirational figures who have changed the world for the better and how; 4) The ethics of the criminal justice system; 5) How contracts are formed and why they are relevant in everyday life; 6) How to negotiate and build arguments; 7) Problem solving in real life when something goes wrong; 8) The Equality Act and challenging stereotypes; 9) How to protect your privacy and data online; and 10) The benefits and legal risks of AI.
