Formalmente criada a 26 de Dezembro de 1979, a Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal do Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal (ESTSetúbal/IPS) entrou em funcionamento a 10 de Outubro de 1983 e iniciou a actividade de leccionação em 1988/89, tendo por objectivo formar técnicos qualificados de nível superior intermédio, em domínios tecnológicos importantes para a região onde se insere.
