Gaining Momentum

Compass.law demonstrates genuine utility within the Canadian legal data publishing niche, evidenced by its partnerships with vLex, LIDI.ca, and Jurisage AI. However, the submission is significantly hindered by exaggerated and unsubstantiated claims regarding audience reach ('everyone') and user adoption ('most people have used my product'). With a small team of 6 and unclear financial metrics ('all time marketcap: 500000'), the project fits the 'Small but promising' calibration tier. Improved credibility in reported metrics is needed to achieve a higher score.

Description
The successor to the original Maritime Law Book Ltd., Compass is a Canadian legal publisher that builds on a history dating to 1969 while opening doors to the future. Founded in 2016, Compass collaborates with other legal publishers, non-profits and legal service providers to convert legal data into advanced legal solutions, insights, tools and opportunities. Compass previously collaborated with vLex to support vLex Canada. From 2020 to 2023, Compass supported the launch of the non-profit Legal Innovation Data Institute (LIDI.ca) as founding member, and technology and data supplier. Through LIDI, members and research partners had access to the full Compass collection in tabular and API formats to support their own advanced AI, knowledge management or public-interest justice tech creations and experiments. Since 2021, Compass has focused its stewardship of Canadian caselaw on the development and growth of Jurisage AI. Headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, Compass collaborates with its domestic and international investors and partners to create and deliver world-class services that bring innovation, choice and competitive discipline to the Canadian legal information marketplace.
